I understand that there is no "Last Ship". "The Last Ship" is the last ship for the one who is taking it. So Frodo took "The Last Ship" for Frodo, not the last ship that will ever sail.
In the book, Shadowfax goes with Gandalf on the Grey Ship back to his home. Because Shadowfax is a Meara, he belongs in Valinor. I wish the movie showed Shadowfax going home too.
Yes, read The Silmarillion. The Grey Ships sail to Valinor, home of the immortal Ainur (gods). It is not the place for men. Man's final home is with Iluvatar (God). That is why immortality is referred to as the elves' doom, because they can't go with men to God.

It's true that it doesn't say for certain if Legolas did take Gimli away with him, but elves are definately immortal. Arwen is partly human.

it never said he took him over with him. it says that it was only a rumour. wow. way to go. but on that note.. it's not Elf Heaven. it's just what it is. an island where one goes to live forever. it wasn't made for the Elves. read the Silmarilion. it's near the beginning. elves aren't immortal. they just age slow. Arwen, for example, had to grow to the size and appearance she has as you see her. the elves are privalidged because they are essentially without sin. most of the other dominant species have shorter lives because of some for of selfishness in their creation by the gods. but, if one of these creatures commit a great selfishless deed then why wouldn't they get the same chance to cross over to the island like the elves?

Even though Gimli did hate the elven race in the beginning he changed his mind after meeting Galadriel. I think his great respect for Galadriel and his friendship with Legolas got him into Valinor. Oh and by the way Frodo didn't take the last ship to Valinor, because later in the back of "Return of the King" Samwise sails to Valinor.

If anybody has actually read it thoroughly, it does say somewhere that because he was one of the Fellowship Gimli was allowed into the elf immortal lands. And by the way, alphonse, you are disgusting.

he had a butt buddy pass. they set sail from the gay havens. legolas was wearing his Elven cloak from the golden shower wood. and not a stich on underneath it. when the valinor asked for there pass legolas opened his cloak and said validate this... My buddy here has a short fat one just like the rest of him... but it will cut the mustard.... we'll have a gay old time.

He& Gimili built a boat and though it says because of his friendship with gimli who dispised eleves at one time but gimli was also from a line of kings that was begot by a valar& a high elf who dwelled in the misty mountains who had forged the 3 crystals where one was taken by mordor&evil valar& the silvan elves-of the teleri-got one&this high elf kept the other&because he was lonely he made the dwarfs or line of dain- I believe these 2 elf lines fought so that is why gimli's instinct is to not like elves, but they are both myths, not man so don't see why they couldnt go to the undying lands together since they did become good friends&saved each other& aragon-in otherwords they made peace&forgave each other before they went beyond-which would be nice if we could all get along so well before we die

Well, consider this:
Elrond was 6/16ths mortal. Besides, ships were already barred from Valinor even before the events of the ring, thanks to the actions of the Numenorians.
But any ship of the Eldar was still able to take the 'straight path' to Valinor. As long as Gimli was with Legolas, they would have been admitted.
Besides, everyone winds up in Valinor anyway. It's just how you get there.

yes, the difficulty is that the boat frodo took was supposedly the last to depart for the havens. and that after aragorn died, according to arwen, there was no boat that could take her there. so it's a mystery how legolas could have gone to the havens. perhaps he built a boat and he and gimli TRIED to get there; whether they succeed is another matter; it does make a romantic scene though - the last two of the fellowship adrift at sea eternally trying to reach the havens... perhaps as they were part of the fellowship the valar would have pity on them. but in that case, why did arwen have to be left behind? after aragorn died, why couldn't she set sail, perhaps together with legolas and gimli? that ruins the picture, though, the romance previously spoken of (i'm talking of romance not in the lovers sense but in the sense of something apt and wonderful). i haven't found a satisfactory answer yet; this issue is still unresolved for me. enlighten me, somebody?

Hmm.
I believe it was a masterful elvish con, Legolam knew that Gimlet son of Groin couldn't make it, so pursuaded his dwarven friend of dubious personal habits to bring along the magical battle axe of Balin and ony other magic items he might have; some mithril stuff; and a few vest pockets stuffed with gems. When the inevitable happened, Legolam feigned grief just long enough to convince his cut-throat crew of wood-elves (still smarting from not getting their hands on that Erebor Loot all those years ago when Doing sone of Boing came to the rescue of Toring son of Boring), filched the magic items, and paraded the deceased Gimlet to the harbour master at Valinor in payment of the tariff. One dead dwarf = safe haven for 29 recalcitrant wood-elves.
