Which would get higher ratings, Enterprise or Space 1999 reruns?
I was sitting there watching a first run episode of Enterprise where they spent the first half hour discussing bland Malcolm's favorite foods, and I got a thought; if the sci-fi channel ran repeats of old Space 1999 episodes against first run episodes of Enterprise, which would do better? Space 1999 had its flaws, but you never saw them spending so much time on meaningless drivel. I think Space 1999 would get higher ratings running back to back with Enterprise, don't you?

space 1999 was about the inhabitants of moonbase alpha. in the pilot, the moon is being used to store earth's nuclear waste. i don't remember the plot too well since it's been years since i've seen it, but something is causing the workers on alpha to lose their minds. one tries to blow the base up and suceeds in blowing up the radioactive waste instead. the ensuing explosion blasts the moon out of earth's orbit. by the way, i read somewhere that the moon usually moves about a foot farther away from the earth every century or so, so one day. the first season was what i call serious sci-fi. there were no ftl ships, and it stayed within the bounds of reason, if you can call the premise possible. i think it was really the first science fiction show created with adults in mind. of course there were a few silly scenes, like in the black sun episode, where the moon is drawn into a black hole and the base fills up with soap bubbles. the one episode from the first season that always gets to me is the one where the alphans land on this planet and a strange mist turns them into cave men. it also turns their uniforms into animal skins, however, when one of the transformed alphans is killed and given an autopsy he still has caps on his teeth. their animal skins also change back to normal uniforms when the infected crewmen did. my favorite from the first season is an episode called dragon's domain. the second season was more adventure based. they also got rid of about half the characters from the first season and introduced myia from cycon who could transform into all kinds of creatures. once more, her uniform changed with her. take care.

Space: 1999 DVDs sold very well in all the countries were they released, came before Trek and are now on a 2nd edition with clean prints are more extras. I guess that means something when comes to rerunnnig the show. But why watch reruns with breaks and sometimes deleted scenes (isnt this a sci-fi channel trademark??) if the DVD is available?

Because of my work schedule, I never really got a chance to watch too many of the "Enterprise" episodes. And, Rand, maybe you can help me out here, but I think "Space 1999" came out in 1975, right? If that's the case, I was only 10 years old, and while I liked science fiction, I always thought the show was too "serious" for me. (I felt the same way about the original "Star Trek" reruns. Thankfully, puberty and maturity would show me the error of my ways, especially after "Star Wars" in 1977 completely turned my world around!) I've never seen the show since, but I'd love to watch it again (and see the Eagle ships!) as well as Enterprise. But if there is a remake of Space 1999 destined for the future, I guess they'll have to call it a different name, like Space 2025 or something. Last time I looked, the moon was still in orbit around the planet!

space 1999 was a classic. and even if you don't like it you have to admit the concept was original. enterprise was just another boring sequel to the original star trek that didn't need to be made. personally, i think we need a reimagining of star trek. we can evem let ron moore screw it up like he did galactica. i can see it now, the united nations saucer enterprise, a sublight vessel bound to the earth solar system. why go anywhere else since there are no alien lifeforms or new civilizations to seek out? this magnificent vessel is commanded by jane t. kirk, the first african american and openly lesbian captain in the fleet. ms. spock will be a very emotional martian with orange skin and pointy breasts.
